fit form to function

: select for shape or pattern based on need

nature uses specific forms to satisfy functional requirements; appropriate forms facilitate continued and occasionally improved function. by having a form fitted to the function, extraneous material usage is reduced, as the shape can impart properties without adding bulk, resulting in a product that is highly tuned to both function and the context.

the needle-like bill of a hummingbird is used as a tube for the bird to lick nectar from flowers. they stick their long, thin bills into the floral nectar chambers and suck up the sweet juice through tubed tongued tips. the form of the bills tend to match the lengths and curvatures of the flowers they prefer. the chestnut-bellied hummingbird feeds mostly on "nacedero" (tricanthera gigantea), tabaco (nicotiana tabacum) and salvia sp. (labiatae).

the mountain tapir has an elongated snout in the shape of a small trunk, this has been an adaptation to be able to pull and tear the leafs. this form is specially useful to collect aquatic plants in the swamps where it usually spends most of the day. it also serves to collect water and fight other males in the mating season.

the tapir plays an important role in dispersing seeds, about 42% of the species of vascular plants eaten by the mountain tapir germinate in its feces. (cooperative relationships)
